Corona Clean Air Coalition Ц Positive Actions
On May 3, 2008, coalition and community members compiled this list of positive contributions of the coalition and its members to date:
Attended and spoke at school facilities board meetings, pleading for emergency funding, in West Phoenix and Prescott
Wrote and called legislators in District 20 and others, encouraging funding
Supported Corona Students for Air Quality benefit concert for their Adopt-a-Room campaign, by helping to advertise and by attending
Spoke with Senator John Huppenthal explaining the urgency of our situation. Now he has met with district officials, he understands the need for funding and he is working with other legislators on bi-partisan support for funding
Sought media attention to focus on problem, for the purpose of obtaining support for funding
Raised public awareness to health concerns
Orchestrated email Campaign УRequest the TestФ that resulted in a written response from Mr. Adolph and direction from the board to Mr. Adolph to allow an independent consultant to make recommendations on additional testing
Engages national experts and creates a clearinghouse for quality air issues
Is making saving taxpayer dollars a priority Ц no bandaid fixes
Is asking tough questions
Is becoming a national model of how to advocate for staff and students suffering health problems
Expedited Building УAФ improvements
Attended Governing Board meetings and raised safety and health issues
Provided opportunities for CdS students to participate in the Earth Day Rally after school, and in the democratic process - УClean Air Inside and OutФ
Provided courage for some parents to remove their children with respiratory problems or health concerns from CdS
Expedited the changes for air improvement in special ed wing in real time
Advocated for CdS teachers who fear they will be punished for whistleblowing
Obtained community donations for rebuilding the school
Generated community pride
Put Corona del Sol on the legislative map
Is an advocate for a healthy learning environment for all students
Asked for district letter to all parents informing them of the possibility of specified health effects from the current air quality - the same information that was given to staff members in February. Most parents have not heard this information and parents have a right to this information
Wrote to Governor Napolitano, Representative Harry Mitchell, and others who represent us, and have a part in supporting a timely solution
Took the high road in interactions, encouraging peaceful gatherings for the governing board meetings and encouraging polite letters to those who represent us
Created a website about Corona Clean Air where people can find interesting articles, photos, and up-to-date information (coronacleanair.org)
Spent many hours and many weeks sorting through various information researched and offered to find the most applicable information to our specific problems, and to identify credible national experts
